Concept
Tension
Erco Lai wanted to explore how the art of origami could be applied to sheet metal,
and if the inherent tension of the material could be harnessed to create a shape that was both aesthetically
pleasing and structurally sound. This led to the creation of Asterisk, an object designed to answer this question.
The concept was to transform a flat sheet of metal into a three-dimensional shape that would be held together by the
tension of the metal.
To achieve this, Erco Lai had to carefully consider the angles and dimensions
of the sheet, as well as the thickness of the metal. Erco Lai used a combination of digital and physical prototyping
to create the perfect balance of tension and rigidity, allowing Erco Lai to create a unique and beautiful form. The
result is an object that is both visually striking and structurally sound.
Process
Laser cutting
A project working with a 25-year OEM factory based in Taiwan.
This local factory is an
expert in fabricating machine shells and structures for living, able to provide a wide range
of services such as laser cutting, metal sheet folding, and welding. Erco Lai engaged the
process closely and got lots inspirations from this experience.
